"We feel that Barratts are second to none and
have nothing but praise for everyone involved with us over the
years. Barratts also gave a personal touch, this made us feel
that we were not just another client."
BBC Radio Nottingham interview about cerebral palsy cases
Alison Brooks, one of our partners specialising in cerebral palsy cases, was invited to speak on BBC Radio Nottingham. She was interviewed on 8 September 2006 and spoke about how these cases are investigated. Alison told Frances Finn of BBC Radio Nottingham that many cases are not due to clinical negligence. Alison was joined by Dr Richard Miles, a Consultant Paediatrician who has advised clients of Barratts solicitors in the past. The interview also helped to explain how compensation awards are calculated and how to find a specialist solicitor.
15 Year Anniversary and £130,000,000 compensation
Barratts solicitors in Nottingham are celebrating their 15th Anniversary. Since 1991 Barratts has established itself as the leading firm in the East Midlands for Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence (Legal 500) but manages to retain a personal and welcoming environment for both staff and clients. This year Barratts’ sponsorship of disabled sport, fundraising for children with special needs and involvement with a local head injury charity were recognised by the Nottinghamshire Law Society Charity Award. Staff at Barratts have clocked up over 100 years of service between them. They were presented with a crystal gift in gratitude of their support which has helped Barratts to recover in excess of £130 million compensation for our clients.
Barratts were proud to be presented with the Charity Award for 2006 at the Nottinghamshire Law Society Annual Dinner on 3 March 2006.
Barratts were nominated for their charity and fund raising endeavours and their commitment and support for individuals and their families who have been affected by disability.
Jill Barratt is pictured accepting the award with Lord Falconer, The Lord Chancellor, Paul Balen, President, Nottinghamshire Law Society and Steve Young of Allied Irish Bank, sponsors of the event.
Alison Brooks, one of our Clinical Negligence Partners, was interviewed by BBC East Midlands on 10 May 2006 following an inquest into the death of Cecelia Welch. The family of Cecelia Welch had instructed Barratts to represent them following concerns about the treatment provided to Mrs Welch in the last weeks of her life. The Coroner recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. He recommended that a nursing care report, which criticised treatment provided to Mrs Welch, be referred to the Chief Executive of Leicester General Hospital NHS Trust. Alison Brooks stated that the most serious concern raised by Mrs Welch's family was that no one from the hospital had informed them of the seriousness of Mrs Welch's condition. Had they done so, news of her death would have been far less traumatic for the family.
The Sheffield Steelers wheelchair basketball team has secured a two year, £10,000 sponsorship deal with Nottingham-based personal injury solicitors Barratts. This renews the Steelers’ long-term relationship with Barratts and secures much-needed funding for the coming two years.
The Steelers’ Jo Harvey (pictured receiving cheque from Ed Myers of Barratts) received the £10,000 cheque on Sunday 22 January at the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
Barratts’ partner Ed Myers says:
“Barratts works closely with people who have spinal injury claims and we recognise the importance of playing our part in this exciting but under-funded sport.”
Jo Harper, the Steelers’ treasurer, says:
“The team has achieved so much in recent years, winning trophies and honours galore, and substantial sponsorship such as this from Barratts means we can focus on the sport and putting together the best team possible.
Barratts’ commitment to sport for disabled people, through the firm’s work with the spinal injuries unit, makes us an ideal team for the firm to sponsor.”
We held our charity Quiz Night in aid of Rutland House School for parents on Friday 5 May 2006. Rutland House School for parents helps pre-school children with special needs including cerebral palsy and Downs Syndrome. The event was held at Nottingham Forest Football ground and included a fund raising auction. This included lots donated by Thomas Cook, Colin Fuller and the Duchess of Rutland who is patron of the charity. Not only was a great time had by all who attended but over £1,800 was raised on the night. This will help to provide much needed support and services for the very special children who attend Rutland House. We would like to thank all those who supported the event.

We are pleased to continue our association with the East Midlands Marauders Wheelchair Rugby Team. The latest major event in their calendar was the Trevor Williams International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament held at Nottingham Trent University on 2nd, 3rd and 4th September 2005. It was a fantastic tournament which Barratts were proud to sponsor. It culminated in a thrilling final with the London team beating the team from Belgium.
On the 29 July 2005 Barratts moved from Melton
Road in West Bridgford to No 3 Wheatcroft Business Park,
Landmere Lane, Nottingham. The office provides a more spacious
reception and better interviewing areas for clients and visitors.
The entire office is at ground floor level and so easily
accessible.
The most noticeable advantage being the ample
free parking!
Barratts have in the past been pleased to
provide sponsorship to Headway. This year Emma Veasey jumped
from 13,000 feet in order to raise further funds. Emma took
part in a sponsored skydive on 6th September 2005 and we
are pleased to say she is still in one piece!
Barratts held their annual Charity Quiz Night
on 22 April 2005. This year all funds raised went to Rutland
House School for Parents which provides support and schooling
for parents with children with cerebral palsy.
The evening was the most successful quiz night
yet raising just over £1,500.00.
In the past Barratts quiz nights have been held to raise
funds for other organisations to include Nottingham Traumatic
Brain Injury Unit and the Spinal Unit at the Northern General
in Sheffield.
Carsington Sailability provides facilities to enable
people with disabilities to sail. Barratts have committed their
continued support for the coming year providing funds for the
general running costs and prizes for the annual Regatta and
North Region Challenge.
The firm continues to be
the major sponsor of Sportability in the East Midlands and has
recently funded a hoist at the Leicester Outward Bound Centre
for disabled access to their canoe course.
Barratts Solicitors have again been named as the leading personal injury and clinical negligence solicitors in the East Midlands in the 2006 edition of Legal 500:
“The small but potent Barratt Goff and Tomlinson comes highly recommended for high value personal injury claims, such as spinal cord, brain injury and clinical negligence cases. The firm's five partners are backed up by just two assistants, so all cases are handled with a high degree of partner involvement. Founding partners Jill Barratt, Malcolm Goff and David Tomlinson all offer over 20 years' experience in personal injury, while Alison Brooks adds clinical negligence expertise.”
Barratts have also been named as one of the top personal injury firms in the Midlands, together with David Tomlinson and Jill Barratt as leading individuals, in the 2007 edition of Chambers UK
“Peers have the utmost respect for Nottingham-based Barratt Goff and Tomlinson because of their 'sensible and measured approach to personal injury matters.' The team is skilled in many areas including clinical negligence, industrial disease, and brain and spinal injury.”
