Stephen Anoff and his family
were awarded compensation of almost £4.5m after he
was left severely brain damaged following complications
during his birth at St George’s
Hospital, London in 1989. Despite the family having been
advised by other solicitors that there were no grounds for
a claim for compensation, Legal Aid was granted to re-investigate.
The Health Authority admitted liability after proceedings
were issued and negotiations resulted in a substantial settlement
for Stephen before Trial. It was successfully argued that
there had been a delay in delivering Stephen following an
abnormal trace of his heart and as a result he suffered
severe lack of oxygen leading to brain damage and the development
of cerebral palsy.
The High Court in London approved the
final settlement. The Health Authority also provided an
apology to Stephen and his family. Stephen’s parents
described the service provided by Barratts as ‘simply
the best’.
