Head Injury
Clients can suffer a head injury as a result of a road traffic accident, an accident at work or often as a result of a criminal attack.
Head injuries vary in severity and can involve a whole host of symptoms such as memory loss (short term and long term), difficulty with speech and concentration, loss of sense of smell, change in personality, poor co-ordination, psychological symptoms, dizziness and headaches. This list is by no means exhaustive.
Suffering a head injruy can be debilitating and lead to a complete loss of independence. For many people a significant period of rehabilitation is required which can include physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. In some instances, people may decide to reside at a rehabilitation facility until their rehabilitation period has concluded.
Often people have to learn how to do the simplest of tasks all over again. They may be unable to return to their pre-accident occupation and have to retrain to enable them to obtain further employment. In the more severe cases, it is not possible to obtain or retain employment at all.
Suffering a head injury not only affects the injured person, but their families too. The injured person may become dependent on family members for activities such as doing the household chores, shopping and gardening. Some may not be able to drive following the injury and be reliant on others for transportation. The injured person may suffer a change in personality, which can cause difficulties within the home.
We at Barratts understand the varying levels of head injury and how they can impact on a person's life. On pursuing a claim for compensation we will endeavour to get an early admission of liability. We can claim interim payments to allow us to ensure that our clients can obtain all the necessary treatment, care and accommodation. We understand the importance of rehabilitation in a person's recovery.
Ed Myers is the Chair of the Trustees of Headway Nottingham, an organisation that provides help and support for those who have suffered a head injury. We appreciate the valuable work these organisations carry out and how having such support can help clients.
